League of Legends Story: MageseekerDigital Sun’s Moonlighter is best known for its monster-stomping 2D action RPG. Riot Forge teamed up with Digital Sun to bring to life the story of Sylas the Unshackled.

The Demacian Magiseekers discovered Sylas’s ability to detect magic when he was a young boy. In order to control and uncover dangerous sorcery hidden in the kingdom, the Mageseekers quickly recruited Sylas. Sylas learned that magic was more common than he had thought during his stay with the Mageseekers. Sylas began to question the rightness of his actions and committed an act to rebel to save the fellow mage’s life, but it ended in tragedy.

Sylas received a life sentence in prison. Shackled in the darkest depths of the Mageseeker compound, Sylas’s desire for vengeance began to take root. Sylas is on a quest to avenge himself and bring Demacia into the light.

This 2D action-RPG lets you combine melee with magic in order to defeat hordes as your rebelliousness grows. You can use your fists or magic to beat down enemies. You can join forces with your fellow mage to grow your army and increase your power. The revolution is underway.

Riot Forge works with developers around the world to create awesome League of Legends Universe experiences. Digital Sun’s extraordinary ability to bring stories to life in a beautiful 2D pixel style made them an obvious choice for bringing to life the League of Legends universe and the champions within.

How did it feel to be asked by an independent studio to work on the League of Legends?

Giménez: It was very exciting. The studio is a huge League fan, so we felt it was a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of our own personality to Runeterra. We also got to create a game featuring characters that we love. Now that it’s almost finished, we can confirm that it’s been a blast to build the game!

What was the biggest challenge in recreating League of Legends’ world?

Giménez: We wanted to make sure that we got right the very popular League champs that appear in the game in terms of visuals, narrative and mechanics. That last one, mechanics, was very fun to do – translating what Jarvan or Garen, or even Sylas himself can do on the MOBA to an ARPG was very fun to do, but challenging to get right. It’s our hope that players will enjoy the game!

Why do you partner with Digital Sun Partners?

Parker: Honestly, we loved Digital Sun’s previous game Moonlighter! We were drawn in by their charming pixel-art style, but stayed because of the action gameplay. While playing, it was exciting to think through ways they might experiment with the League of Legends characters, so we reached out to see if they’d be open to the possibility. As you can see, it was a success.

Was your favorite part of the Digital Sun partnership?

Parker: Digital Sun is a real League of Legends fan. The core team had been playing for years long before we’d even met each other. The Mageseeker players are familiar with these champions and have a personal relationship with them, based on thousands of game sessions. I think it really shows that a group of fans have made this game, with the easter eggs they’ve hidden in there, their passion for the champions and the world of Runeterra. This made working with Forge a breeze.

What do you like best about Riot Forge games featuring League of Legends players?

Parker: Riot Forge games give us an opportunity to get up close and personal with our champions in a way that isn’t possible in our bigger live service games. We can create these character vignettes that explore the motivations and nuance of our champions as we’re storytelling. The players can immerse in Runeterra by touching our factions and interacting with them like only video games can. This is a great way to demonstrate the power and strength of our Champions, as well as tell compelling stories.
