While you may know us from the many cozy, heartwarming titles we’ve published, such as CalicoAnd Lake, The Forest CathedralThis game goes in a more dark direction. While the game maintains tranquil and low-stress gameplay it creates an unsettling feeling of terror that is almost in line with horror. The game is a psychological thriller that takes place in a dark, mysterious setting. It’s based on real-world environmental disasters like DDT. Or, as Brian Wilson better describes it, an environment thriller. Although the game’s protagonist Rachel Carson is an environmental scientist, the most striking feature of the game is its haunting setting.

Art is like life

The Forest Cathedral’s story is a dramatic reimagining of real-world scientist Rachel Carson’s environmental science book, Silent SpringThis was her account of DDT’s harmful effects. Brian Wilson, a developer, took inspiration from Carson’s attempts to silence her and used his findings to create an artistic interpretation.

As Wilson explains, “the story of Rachel Carson is a David vs. Goliath story.” Throughout the game, you’ll become immersed in situations that evoke a feeling of struggling against overwhelming resistance. Wilson shows how Carson felt when she tried to tell the world what life-saving and potentially fatal information was kept secret by giant chemical corporations. The Forest CathedralThe same fear and uncertainty are imposed on the victim, making them anxious about what the evil plot will be.

Wilderness

What environment will players explore? The Forest Cathedral is based on Cook Forest State Park’s own Forest Cathedral, located in western Pennsylvania – near where both Wilson and Carson grew up. The vibrantly rendered surroundings paired with the atmospheric soundtrack – including several original pieces composed by Wilson – create a peaceful yet eerie setting for the story to unfold. As you explore the island’s secrets and uncover its hidden mysteries, you will be surrounded by intrigue from the heights of the majestic indigenous trees up to the calm lake. Though locally inspired, the game’s themes of social consciousness and our duty to our environment apply globally.
