January is now the only good movie month after M3GAN and Plane
January was once the most dreadful month in movies. January was known best for its dreck. MortdecaiMeet the SpartansPlease see the following: Movie 43. These films were more about masochism and cinema than cinema. It was stuff that would challenge even the most dedicated Bad Movie Night enthusiasts. But in 2023, the M3GAN? This may be the last month of good movies.
This shift could be due to confluences of events. Blockbuster franchises are expanding further beyond their summer window. Quantumania: Ant-Man and The WaspThe film will debut in theatres on February 17, which is the first Marvel Studios release. Black Panther. Already, blockbusters stretch to December. A month that is often occupied by Star Wars movies and Avatar films, as well as a Spider-Man (or more). This means January is now the only month left that’s reliably free from franchise fare. That’s because it’s a month uniquely resistant to branding: a 31-day stretch mostly defined by not belonging to the previous year.
Studio used to use the first month in a year to dump projects with low quality and uncertain marketability. Because awards season kicks off in January, prestige movies also need a lot. This allows them to expand their theater runs, or return to the theatres, thanks to word-of-mouth generated by Oscar nominations. This is how streaming services have changed the equation: Every streamer now needs buckets full of content. Studios have to decide what’s worth pawning off to a service, and what’s worth a January theatrical release. That’s a tricky question, and no one seems to have a set answer yet.
That’s left January as a month worth looking forward to, a way to kick off the year with a bunch of movies where you can see all sorts of unusual shit: the avant-garde, abrasive horror of Skinamarink. Brawny, savage flight crew action PlaneA film without a title. M3GAN the petty murder doll, which will nearly certainly become a summer blockbuster by 2024. If you’re lucky, you can even catch a long-awaited international cult release like Shin Ultraman.
January’s existence outside of the hype cycle and perpetual franchise demands also means that streaming movies or on-demand releases can also breathe and be enjoyed on more generous and equitable terms than they can during the rest of the year. If the viewers look out for these films, they can be a great option. Last year’s Indian action-comedy An Action HeroAnirudh Iyer’s 2022 debut directorial film, “The Fantastic 2022 Directorial Debut of Anirudh Iyer”, was released via Netflix Jan. 27. The same day, the mysterious Christian Bale period mystery, “The Pulpy Christian Bale Period Mystery” became available on Netflix. Pale Blue EyeIt was among the first major Netflix releases in 2023.
January and its window of diverse, unique cinema won’t last forever. Two weeks are left for the MCU movie, but soon the blockbuster machine can resume. Franchises will come back to life. The rankings of the franchises will be determined and debated. The debates about the meaning of these movies and whether we wish to follow their progress will continue. Again, it will be difficult to discuss movies as individual works and not as part of a company scorecard. The noise will continue for 11 months more, disturbingly similar to what rumbled last year. After that, it’ll be January. Praise M3GAN.
