The Last Of Us Part I: What Do You Think Of This Remake’s Visual Upgrades?

Geoff Keighley announced that he would surprise unveil The Last of Us Part I at his Summer Game Fest Showcase. This was the long-rumored remake of 2013’s title. PlayStation had another (accidental?) plan as they leaked all details about Part I just hours before it was officially revealed.

During the show, Neil Druckmann (director of The Last of Us) and Keighley took photos at PlayStation. It was obvious that they were both upset by the leak. Nonetheless, The Last of Us remake is real, and it’s out on Sept. 2. Now that all of this is over, the fans are focusing their attention on Part I visual updates. This has apparently caused a split in the community.

Many people enjoy the changes and improvements to their visual appearance. Joel, Ellie and other characters look more like The Last of Us Part II. Others, though, don’t feel these visual upgrades were necessary, citing how impressive The Last of Us (and its 2014 remaster) already are. Then there’s the $70 price tag – are these Part I upgrades and updates worth the price of a brand new Sony first-party title, or should this game have been a little cheaper?

Although I find the current price of $70 a bit steep, the possibility that this product could be worth it is there. Druckmann told Keighley that Part I isn’t just about the visuals. Druckmann explained that Part I was reworked by the studio and has an AI significantly enhanced. It runs at 60 frames per seconds (or at the very least, 60 FPS).

I rewatched The Last of Us several times in the years leading to Part II. The AI and combat were particularly dated. I’m glad Naughty Dog reworked them. Had Part I just been about graphical fidelity, I’m not sure I’d agree with the $70 price tag. But if these other changes are as significant as Druckmann said, then I’ll be okay with it. It remains to be seen how Part I will pan out.

But enough about me. Let me know what you think! How do you feel about the remake? Is it impressive, or do you think The Last of Us’ original visual fidelity was so good that it minimizes that of Part I? How do you feel about the $70 price tag – is it acceptable, or is it too high?
