Get up Close and Personal with the Callisto Protocol

It is important to remember that there aren’t any rules when creating unforgettable horror games.  As a developer it’s all about going with your gut.
Striking Distance Studios has this as a core principle.  To deliver scares of terror that combine atmosphere, tension and brutality with humanity and helplessness, we sweat every detail.  We call it “Horror Engineering.”

While you’ll find plenty of atmosphere and tension in the first trailer for The Callisto Protocol, we wanted to put the game’s brutality front and center in our reveal for Xbox gamers.

The Callisto Protocol is a story based third-person sci-fi survival horror game set on Jupiter’s dead moon Callisto in the year 2230. Jacob Lee is a Black Iron Prison prisoner. Players assume the role. Jacob is forced to fight for his survival when the mysterious eruption throws the moon into chaos.

One of the first things that you’ll notice about The Callisto ProtocolThey are the animals. They’re called Biophage, and these things are grotesque.  Our creatures all start as human beings who have gone through terrifying and flesh-tearing transformations. They now live in the Halls of Black Iron.

We want players to get up close and personal.

The Callisto Protocol’s combat system is a mix of close-quarters melee action, long range gunplay, and a unique gravity gun called the GRP (“Grip”) that lets players move seamlessly between the two.

The game’s melee system uses a stun baton that Jacob has scavenged from one of the prison’s guards.  Jacob uses this baton, which was previously used to subdue inmates.  The left stick can be used to block or doge attacks and the right stick is used for looking for openings that will allow them to perform a skull-splitting attack on their opponents.

The game’s ranged combat will give players a selection of upgradeable weapons to take out Biophage from a distance.  Skilled players can take off the creatures’ arms, legs, and even heads – but that’s no guarantee that this will stop the Biophage from attacking.  Because ammo is limited, it will be important for players to have a strategic approach when shooting.

Finally, there’s the powerful weapon known as the GRP. It allows you to grab, throw, and even take out enemies.  Are you being attacked by a group of monsters?  To get more breathing space, players can grab Biophages with GRP and toss them around the room.  Are you low on ammo  You can use the GRP to grab your enemies for melee kills. GRP allows players to set the pace and strategize.

For some truly brutal entertainment, Biophage can be thrown into industrial fans spinning, spiked walls and generators to create environmental dangers.  There are many grisly options.
