Mario Strikers: Battle League review: Mario and his friends feel new again

Mario Strikers: Battle LeagueCould have been just another in a series of Mario games. You could have used the same mechanics as previous Strikers games and called it quits. The characters’ personalities are displayed between matches and during them. This is something that Mario games don’t have. Whether it’s Waluigi confidently lounging on the pitch just before kickoff, or Peach fanning off her frustration before letting her temper get the best of her, Battle League It breathes life back into characters that no mainline Mario game has been able too refresh.

Nintendo is great at putting out playful games that don’t take Mario too seriously. However, Battle LeagueIt is all about you even less seriously. The most striking thing about Next Level Games is their willingness to bring the Mario characters to hilarious heights. In between goals and matches, the characters’ personalities shine. Five Toads perform a joyful airplane race across the field. In another instance Wario butt smashes a soccerball so hard it rockets toward the goal.

It is difficult to understand the basic idea of the game, which adds to the bizarre chaos and surreality of the matches. The game opens on a giant, translucent, extradimensional orb that soon produces a chimeric monster of a soccer field — a fusion of two completely differently courses joined at the center line. Imagine the cartoony jungle from Donkey Kong on the left, and Bowser’s lava castle on the right, and you get a typical field in Battle League. We can see how each team emerged from the interdimensional portal.

It’s more Mario Kart like than a Mario Kart. Mario Golf: Super Rush. It is clear that the world or campaign has no narrative or context. It’s a colorful series of short, roughly four-minute-long matches of 5v5 soccer. If you’d like, the game’s forgettable robot mascot offers you a tutorial. Otherwise, you can just start the game and go to the pitch. Unfortunately, if you’d like to know more about the characters or how to intercept a lob pass, the game hides additional information in a guide only accessible between matches.

Strikers is not like many other sports games and sequels. More. This roster only offers Mario, Bowser (Lugia, Luigi), Peach and Rosalina as well Yoshi. Battle League allows for customization, instead of the countless characters. For each player, you can purchase gear to improve their stats such as strength, speed and passing. It is possible to create the ideal super-charged soccer player. In one of the more advanced cups, you’ll face down a team of toads: fast Toad, buff Toad, and a Toad that’s just really good at passing. The mechanical side. Battle League Sticking to the basics is key. We prefer action to complexity. When doing a “super strike”, the franchise’s signature mechanic, Battle League With highly stylized lines art, the animations are poured onto the cast. (The easiest comparison is the jump serves from Haruichi Furudate’s Haikyuu!!Then, either your bright-eyed Mario (or the rose-carrying Waluigi) will execute their game-breaking kick. Toad is a notable example. He headbutts with the ball to such force that the ground changes in a volcano explosion.

This all helps to inject a lot of personality and charm into these boring characters. I can’t help but feel that this is the most care and attention we’ve seen paid to them in years.

These energetic moments helped me get rid of some frustrations that I was experiencing elsewhere. Battle League. My biggest hang-up is that I can’t remap the controls on my Nintendo Switch controller. I found myself mixing up the “pass” and “shoot” buttons in my head so often that I found myself muttering “A is shoot, B is pass” out loud as I played. I think A is the easiest pass button thanks to all the Mario Strikers games and previous entries.

Battle League’s multiplayer aspects also expose the cracks in the foundation. Single-player allows you to cycle through the various characters, and an AI can take over the entire team. You must communicate with your friend when you play on the same team. You could end up being the wrong type if both of you attempt to change the forward striker. It’s easy to get confused and have a lot of fun playing in a group team. (This also leaves me apprehensive about how the full online functionality will pan out when it’s live.)

In an iterative series of Mario sports games, where each entry seems to raise the bar — Mario Golf: Super Rush Mario Tennis Aces come to mind — Battle League The game is very easy to master. But it does wonders for some of gaming’s oldest characters, allowing the likes of Peach, Wario, or Waluigi to let loose. In the fiercely limited time I’ve spent with each of them on the field these past two weeks, I’ve seen an energy and gravitas from these characters that they haven’t shown in years. Whether it’s the temper of Peach or the joy of a fellow Toad basking in the glory of victory, Battle League Is ready to stretch out its legs.
